Video of the Week: Our Favorite Fijian Pastime

Something Garrett and I took full advantage of was the easy access to an incredible swimming spot, fit with rock jumps, mini-rapids, sand bars, bamboo for building “bilibilis” (or bamboo rafts), and tons of kids always wanting to join the fun. This spot in the Luva River is called Nabukalau, or Black water, after a nearby creek that apparently is a bit murky. This video is just a taste of how much fun we had spending hours upon hours at this spot.

Check out another video that displays the joy of the river swimming spots, notably Namando.

This makes me ache for the world of travel even more. I made a decision in the early part of this year to take up a similar task to yourself next summer (planning and saving time) to just travel. I’ve wanted to do it since I was in uni but got worried that I needed to get into the regular working world and gain some experience, cause that’s what you’re led to believe is the ’sensible’ path. Now in my second job and 3 years out of uni, I’ve got my act together on what’s really important to me – and that’s discovering new people and places.
I’ll be keeping plugged in to your blog as I set up my own in preparation for the trip.

    • It’s really ironic that we’re led to believe “real world experience” is that work world where we barely see the real world at all. I’ve learned more from traveling than I ever could in a school or work atmosphere. I’m glad you’ve had the chance to evaluate your interests and go for what you want. I’d love to hear more about your trip prep, and best of luck!
