The view from my bike in Berlin, Germany

What our experiences in Berlin look like thus far

May 16, 2012 in Europe, THINK Global School, Update, Videos

Though I'm not processing my own experiences in video form as of lately (due to lack of time), I'm really please with what I've been able to crank out in Berlin. There are moments when what I've documented for work has impacted me, mostly at Wannsee Haus where the Final Solution was created. In this great city of culture and history, cinematic moments abound. Here are the ones I've caught thus far.

Getting lost in Berlin

Global Studies teacher Andrew McLean sent the students on a scavenger hunt around Berlin, Germany this weekend. Though they were asked to visit points of interest like famous synagogues and the Pergamon museum, students were encouraged to discover new locations and have personal experiences with their new host city. Equipped with their iPhones, they documented each unique adventures to share with peers and reflect afterward. (L. Clark)

ANZAC Day memorial service in Berlin, Germany

ANZAC Day is a time when Australians and New Zealanders pause to reflect on those who fought on foreign lands, believing that they were leaving a legacy for the generations after them. With four New Zealanders and an Australian as part of the TGS community, it seemed like a good idea to attend the ANZAC Day service, this year hosted by the New Zealand Embassy at the 1939-45 War Cemetery in Berlin. Furthermore, they have been studying legacy and memory in World Literature class. Students were asked to reflect on the service and how it is observed in Germany where there has to be a degree of political sensitivity. (A. McLean)

Wannsee Haus & the Final Solution

Global Studies teacher Andrew McLean and World Literature teacher Irene Krugman coordinate a visit to the Wannsee Haus where the conference for the Final Solution took place. At the Wannsee conference, Hitler's top officers developed the document that led to the death of millions of Jews. (L. Clark & A. McLean)

Last weekend was a 10/10, hanging with my oldest friends, their newest babes, and my all-star seawormies who know how to surprise a girl at the airport.
.
Yes, Will is pretending to do the armpit fart thing.
.
Yes, you are seeing a cat tail under the delicious cookie pie.
.
Yes, that’s one snuggly baby.

[Jan 23] This is my “government shutdown” look...or perhaps more accurately—after a 1.5 hr wait to get back into the country—my “why is he screwing DHS while claiming to improve border security” look. 👌🏻Irony👌🏻 #customscamera

Next week I get to see my brother’s kids, and it’s making me think about the last time I traveled internationally with one of them.
.
In June, I circled the Ring Road of Iceland with my brother, my colleague, and my niece, Liv. We weren’t sure how she’d fare with all the camping, long drives, and lack of internet, but she evolved over those 11 days and proved to me once again what an efficient classroom the wide world is.
.
If you haven’t seen it yet, I made a video of our trip and her growing, visible interest in the experience of being abroad, of exploring. She became more independent, self-sufficient, and responsible in a little over a week. Can’t wait for her next adventure in February! Check out the link in bio.

New year, new first chapter. Maybe. I’m trying some new things in 2019 to reach my writing goals for this WIP. Sometimes you gotta try flipping the order of events, changing the voice on your page, even switching up your writing space to spark something new. I’m testing out my new membership to the @lighthousewriters center, an historic home in Denver with many good nooks for a writing session.
.
Four months ago, I had high hopes for how far along I’d be in this third revision process, but I can’t say I’m disappointed in the fact that I’m taking my time. I’ve been doing a lot of research and reading that has enhanced my thinking about why the things in my memoir happened. The why...the reason for writing and reading. And last night, a friend reminded of the amazing utility of writing in order to make sense of the what and the whys in our lives.
.
Today, I leave you with these two points:
1️⃣ check my link in bio for a post on goal-setting, reading, and what I’ve gained from books this year
2️⃣ whether or not you are a writer by any definition, don’t dismiss the value of journaling, writing letters, drafting chapters, etc. that help you process events in your life. You might bury it in a drawer or release it to the world, but if it’s something that resonates in your mind or dreams or repeated conversations, it could benefit grateful from living on a page. It might do you a world of good...and who knows...it might do good for the world 🧀

Colorado has a new look...and a new official resident! This time last year, I was gearing up for my fourth term of grad school and packing for three months in New England, Japan, and Fiji. A lot has changed in my life since then: I graduated, left my job, moved to Denver, and started my life as a full-time writer.
.
All things considered, it was a successful year, even though I bombed my New Year’s resolution and haven’t finished my WIP like I thought I would.
.
I’m both a big picture thinker and small detail obsessor, so setting goals and assessing progress continuously helps me ensure I’m moving forward in the direction I want to be.
.
At this time of year, you may be considering resolutions or goals (whatever you like to call them) for 2019. You may be ridiculing yourself for falling short of last year’s goals. My take? I think goal-setting needs to be more fluid and complex than rigid checkpoints you may outgrow. Check the link in my bio for a recent blog post on the matter.

I had been on “the slopes” three times and all but sworn off winter downhill sports when I moved to Colorado. My skiing friends had given up trying to coax me to the double-bladed side. While the landscape has always been a real draw for me, I didn’t like the barrier of entry (cost!!), and my damned feet never went the way I wanted them to! But then I was convinced to try snowboarding, and I actually liked it! ...except the part where my ankles burned like a bee sting. Hopefully that goes away the more I practice. A big thank you to my patient teachers: Charlie, Fairy, and Greg.

Perhaps I’m nearing the end of my #customscamera glamour shots. This is the smirk of someone who’s supposed to be tech savvy yet couldn’t get the Mobile Pass app to work, but I’m sure next time I’ll be more successful (or finally get Global Entry sorted). I do enjoy these little post-flight photo shoots, but I think I’d probably like the no-line route through immigration even more. Who else has #GlobalEntry?
